SPEED CAMERA'S & ROAD SAFETY

The speaker at the November meeting was Martyn Schlangen who is employed by Conwy County Borough Council as a Road safety Officer. Martyn explained that just when we have got used to see the Mobile Speed Camera vehicles with the logo Arrive-Alive, someone since the 1st April has dreamed up the logo GoSafe. Martyn explained that his main duties are educating young people due to the fact that in 2008 in North Wales 41 people died on the roads - a third of these were aged between 16 & 25.
He then went on to give a demonstration of the 'Ultralite 100' speed device that measures speed 40 times in 0.4 seconds, this is connected to a video camera and the images taken are recorded on to sealed hard
drives. Martyn did ask if he could bring the mobile camera vehicle to the Studio, but the powers that be declined his request.

CORRESPONDENCE

A response to the article in last month's Newsletter, which was entitled Golden Anniversary has been received. An e-mail has been received from Mark Harper MW1MDH. The RSGB's Region 6 Manager

Hi Wynne

Please pass my heartiest, and belated congratulations to CVARC for achieving 50 years membership of the RSGB, a feat that not many clubs are achieving these days, what with falling memberships and extortionate room rental in some cases, something which is causing clubs to take up in rooms that are too small for the membership, and limiting growth of the club.

CVARC is probably one of the most active clubs in the region, what with the various events they have been involved with, and with 50 years affiliation, certainly stands out as an example to other clubs..

I apologise whole-heartedly for not popping by the stand and passing on my congrats in person, and for only just catching up with the e-mails, after what has been a bit of a long week for me..

Here's to the next 50 years of CVARC :)

Best 73

The following has been extracted from December 2009 RSGB RADCOM

OFCOM PLANS TO AUTOMATICALLY EXTEND BATCH OF LICENCES.

As you know, Ofcom introduced a new, easy online licensing system in 2006 that requires amateur radio licensees to validate their licence details at least once every five years. If you have not already got your
licence, you can see how easy it is at Ofcom's website: www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc.

If your licence has an issue date between November 2006 and August 2007 and licensing details have not been amended since then, your licence will be due for validation around the time of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. During this time, Ofcom will be busy preparing for the event, making sure that the extra demand for spectrum is met, without causing interference. Therefore, Ofcom has decided this time round to automatically extend the validation period of these amateur licences, for a further year - giving 6 years from the issue date. After this, these licence holders will need to update their licences themselves.

Ofcom has taken this decision to avoid having a large number of validations to process around the time of the London 2012 Games. Ofcom's improved licensing website is now easier than ever to use with useful FAQs and tools to get you started. It will only take a few minutes to register your details and make any necessary updates to your licence.

All licensees and applicants are encouraged to register, apply or validate online - go to www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc

BBC ROADSHOW

It has come to our notice that the BBC Roadshow will be held at Hafan y Môr Pwllheli. You may know Hafan y Môr by its old name of Bultins Holiday Camp. The opening time is believed to be 10am till 4pm. Details are on our Web site.

THE SEARCH FOR GREY MATTER STIRRERS

I can inform you that contact has been made with the Metrological office in Exeter to see if a DVD that the secretary had see in a lecture regarding the weather forecast. Unfortunately The DVD was the copyright
of the BBC in London from internal training and therefore not available to the general public. Following on from this disappointment contact has been made with BBC Wales and a contact in the Engineering department is endeavouring to help us find any interesting Video's or DVD. From this contact the above information about the BBC Roadshow in Pwllheli came to light. The secretary is intending to attend and may come away with something for the future.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be held on the Wednesday, the 2nd December 2009 at the studio.

This will be an evening for us to be entertained by two DVD's that the chairman has borrowed from the RSGB Library. They are:-

Mobile Telephony and Help (Video made by National Radiological Protection Board) 27 min

The Secret Life of Radio (From Chrystal radio to the most complex Rig) 35 minutes
