Mini DXpedition to Gambia

The club welcomed the speaker Stewart Rolfe GW0EFT from Anglesey and a member of the Dragon Amateur Radio Club in Llanfair PG to the July meeting. In Stewart's own words "In the spirit of mutual club back scratching" he gave a once in a lifetime opportunity to listen to an illustrated talk on his visit to the Gambia last March. "A PowerPoint presentation consisting of pretty holiday pictures and the story of his radio operation as C56ETF ...... in the sun"

As he was going on holiday to The Gambia and knowing that was it is regarded as an Amateur Radio rare country, he decided to take the smallest and lightest radio gear he could acquire as hand luggage and have his own Mini Dxpedition to Gambia. On arrival in Gambia his problems started, as he hadn't yet got permission or a licence to operate, duty was required, and after a lot of discussion he arranged for his equipment to be securely held until he either got a licence or returned to the UK. After quite a lot of running about be collected a licence C56EFT. He returned to the customs, collected his gear and operated. After a frustrating start, Stewart soon started to get pile ups, which it was obvious by his comments he really enjoyed.

CORRESPONDENCE

E-mail received from Mark Harper (RSGB Regional Manager)

Hi All
I've kicked off the Club Of The Year initiative in R6 - Take a look at: 2009 Club of the Year

I'm still awaiting for someone to take the entries - but I thought I'd give you all the heads up.

Basically - all the info you need is on the website - The winning club gets a plaque (and the recognition that comes with it!) - this will be presented at the 2010 AGM. All clubs who participate will get a certificate of participation.

If anyone has got anything already, or any questions - dont hesitate to get in touch!

RSGB Club of the year competition

We are now just a few months away from the close of the regional club competition and still some regional websites have yet to publicise the event. The rules are pretty simple just a 600 word statement and up to 3 photographs on what the club has been doing over the past year and the club could not only win the regional competition but also win theNational event with a prize worth over a £1000.00.

Take a look at: 2009 Club of the Year

The following e-mail has been received by Mark Harper with a request it be forwarded on to Clubs.

Dear Radio Club,

I am writing to make you aware of the Contest University UK Programme taking place on 10th October at this year's RSGB Convention. Please could you circulate this to club members to allow as many people the opportunity to be part of what is expected to be a popular event.

Welcome to CTU UK 2009!
Taking place at the RSGB Convention in Wyboston near Bedford, England, on October 10th 2009, Contest University (CTU) UK is not only the place where you will learn all the skills and secrets into getting you well under way with your contesting activities, but it also offers experienced contesters the opportunity to learn from others and possibly pick up on some new tips to gain that winning edge over others!
Sponsored by ICOM UK, the event is based on the highly successful Dayton CTU and will address a UK audience of wannabe, novice, and experienced contesters throughout a double stream programme of classes (Multi Sessions) and interactive workshops (Small Groups). This is the second CTU UK, following a successful launch in 2008 which saw 125 participants.

This year's programme will be split between Multi-Session (Presentations) and Short-Groups (Workshops/Interactive Sessions).

Contesting for Beginners, Lee Volante G0MTN

To be part of CTU UK 2009, just turn up at the RSGB Convention. Cost for admission to the Convention allows you to attend as many of the sessions as you wish (see www.rsgb.org/rsgbconvention). All students will receive presentation material on registering on the day. To ensure your space at the lectures and that you receive a pack, turn up early! Attend at least 5 of any of the sessions to receive a certificate of graduation from Contest University UK!

Thank you and I hope to see you at CTU UK 2009!

Dear members

Important news today from UKQRM control.

The very well respected publication, The EMC Journal has in its issue number 83 looked at the threat to both hobby and professional shortwave users.
You may be interested to read it.

With very kind permission from The EMC Journal a copy has been made available for download from the UKQRM web site AT THIS LINK

Now you will be able to see just how serious all this is!

You will also be able to see the facts presented in a most professional way by a number of respected authors.

Take this opportunity now so that you are ready to defend your hobby or professional use of the radio spectrum from what can only be described as very questionable government and EU Commissions!

The following has been received from GB2RS
(See elsewere on the website for more details)

Dear Clubs,

Here's the latest information on the National Hamfest, on 2 and 3 October, organised by RSGB in association with Lincoln Short Wave Club.

If you plan to visit just one major radio rally this year, make sure it's the National Hamfest!

Luso Towers have been creating huge interest at Dayton and Freidrichshafen with their enormous towers. They will be visiting the National Hamfest with a 36m version. In its compact state, the four sections still take up 12.5m of floor space and the base is 1.7m across! It comes with an outside platform for easy access to the antennas as well as steps. It is computer controlled to raise and lower the mast and has a host of other features such as wind speed indicator, one touch height memory and automatic wind speed descent control. When you see this huge tower up close, it's impressive. Luso Towers have said that the tower is, as yet, unsold and that they are willing to negotiate a very special price to any UK amateur wishing to buy the tower.

Since we last wrote to you, even more traders have booked their place. You will be able to see the latest radios on display by Icom, Kenwood & Yaesu - and talk to the staff who know the radios well. All the major dealers will be in attendance with a huge variety of radios, antennas and accessories for sale. If you want to know more about the best special interest groups in amateur radio, then this is an ideal place to
visit and chat to them.

The RSGB will be in attendance with many of their committee ready to talk to members and non-members alike about their concerns and questions. Steve Nichols who has written the popular Understanding
Propagation column in RadCom will be on the Propagation Committee stand. The new 2010 RSGB Yearbook will be launched on Friday 2nd at the show. There will be a great Bring & Buy too- no better time to turn out that unused equipment!

There will be a free prize draw for visitors to the show as well as a Yaesu VX-8 daily draw. Visitors could win an Icom IC-72, SuperAntennas Beam in a Bag, Heil Quiet Phone and many more excellent prizes.

Already booked & confirmed are the following:

Bhi, BYLARA, Grantham RC, Icom, JBT Trading, Kenwood, LAM Communications, Lincoln Repeater Group, Lincoln Short Wave Club, Linear Amp UK, Luso Towers, March ARS, Martin Lynch & Sons, Mexborough & District ARS, Moonraker, Peak Electronic Design, Practical Wireless, RadioUser, RadioWorld, RAFARS, RAF Waddington ARC, RAIBC, RAOTA, RNARS, Sandpiper Aerials, Skegness Spalding and District ARS, UK Tesla Coil Builders, Waters & Stanton, Westlake, Yaesu

National Hamfest - the ONLY place you'll see all these organisations
together!

You do NOT want to PRINT this Document...... Do you?
(Hence wasting paper, ink, electricity, time & effort)

Whilst this web page will print off directly, it is recommended that, should you, for any reason, require a hard copy..... then you print off the .pdf formatted newsletter, which can be found HERE (This document has been formatted to "look nicer" when printed off, but the contents are IDENTICAL to what's on THIS page)

PLEASE BE AWARE
1. That you will need a .pdf reader to be able to access the above link.
2. You're NOT helping the environment by printing off either this web page or the .pdf document to paper ..........

3. A suitable program to read and/or print off any .pdf document can be downloaded (free of charge) from Adobe by clicking on the link below
4. .pdf means Portable Document Format. Any file that has been saved to .pdf format can be read on ANY computer with ANY operating system installed thereon. Thus, this is a VERY POPULAR format to be used both on websites and in emails- if you don't already have a pdf reader on your pc, you should consider one now - you WILL need one to read many on line documents
